For those who want to discover London on foot or cycle there are free organised events, and  walking and cycling routes you can explore on your own. There are also many free fitness activities, including free exercise classes in shops and parks, and free organised runs through the streets of London.

London for Free. 12 free self-guided London walking tours, with online animated maps.  Subjects include Bridges, City, Nautical, Music, Theatres and Writers. More info.  

Our Parks. Free group exercise classes, led by qualified instructors, in many London parks in co-operation with London Boroughs. All abilities and ages. More info. 

Walk London. Free guided walking weekends run three times a year, funded by Transport for London. 40 different walks to choose from. More info.

WALKING ROUTES

Capital Ring. A circular Walk London route consisting of 15 sections between Woolwich and Becton District Park. Covers 78 miles of open space and nature reserves. More info. 

Green Chain Walk. 50 mile linked system of open spaces in south east London, running  through 300 open spaces between the Thames and Crystal Palace Park. More info.

London Outer Orbital Path. Also known as LOOP. 150 mile signed walk along public footpaths, through parks, woods and fields around the edge of Outer London. More info. 

London Toolkit Self Guided Walks. Four self-guided walking routes, with online maps, covering London Icons, City of London, Kensington and Shopping. More info. 

Parkland Walk. A 2.5 mile linear green walkway following railway line that ran between Finsbury Park and Alexandra Palace, through Crouch End and HIghgate. More info. 

Thames Path. A National Trail, 184 miles long, that follows the Thames from its source in Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier. Proposed in 1948, opened in 1996. More info.

Wandle Trail. A 12.5 mile walking and cycling trail in south west London that links green spaces as it follows the River Wandle from Croydon to Wandsworth. More info. 

CYCLING EVENTS & ROUTES

Christmas Day Ride. Southwark. Cycle ride every Christmas Day since 2001. Organised by a cycling group based at the Dog & Bell pub in Prince St. Deptford. More info. 

Dunwich Dynamo. Hackney. Overnight cycle ride from London Fields Park to Dunwich on the Suffolk coast (120 miles). Saturday night closets to the full moon in July. More info. See on map. 

Time Out Brilliant Bike Rides. Time Out suggests nine cycling routes from London. Ranging from an easy circuit of Richmond Park to a more challenging expedition to Brighton. More info. 

FITNESS

Adidas Studio. Tower Hamlets. Free fitness studio run by Adidas at 152 Brick Lane. Exercise, yoga, runs and nutrition workshops. More info. See on map. 

Good Gym. An unusual free running club which combines running with good deeds, such as helping an elderly person with a household task. More info. 

London City Runners. The largest running club in London. Absolutely free. Welcomes everyone from total beginners to seasoned marathon runners. More info. 

London Friday Night Skate. Westminster. A marshalled street skate departing from Wellington Arch, Hyde Park Corner, every Friday at 8pm. Weather dependent. More info. See on map.

Parkrun. Parkrun organises free, weekly 5 km timed runs in London and around the world. Suitable for all abilities from beginners to Olympians. More info.
